Landscape Architecture

Our planning and design mission is to “Create Places of Meaning”

In all our work we strive for the highest levels of sustainability in our material selection, in artistic rainwater management, and in native plant selection.

Background

ADA Barrier Removal Planning:

WPG will provide transition plans to remove barriers to accessibility for both Title II and Title III facilities as part of our projects or as a stand alone planning effort to protect client liability.

Art:

Landscape Architects are artists in how we approach all projects. However, certain projects allow us the expanded freedom to create art in and with the landscape. We have participated with several clients on purely artistic endeavors over the years including arts based development corridors, landscape art installments, and outdoor

Arboreta and Public Gardens:

Our professionals have over 25 years of experience in 12 states with a special passion for trees and fine gardens. In addition to public arboreta and gardens, WPG can also provide estate design.

Cemeteries:

WPG provides historic cemetery master planning to restore and rehabilitate facilities for a reverent visitor experience and to activate cemeteries to become more fiscally sustainable.

Corporate:

Campus design at WPG extends beyond higher education to include the corporate campuses and headquarters.

Cultural Landscapes:

National Park Service Preservation Brief #36 on Cultural Landscapes guides our approach and ethic which has been applied to all of our market areas. Projects include but are not limited to the Olmsted Firm designed McKinley Estate, Logan Elm State Memorial, and Cannon Hill Battlefield site in Rowlesburg, WV.

Government:

WPG create centers of government that make a statement. From the first of its kind river of illuminated glass to brick quilt patterns in pavement, we tie the heart of the community into the heart of their civic spaces.

Graphic Design:

Artistic presentations of proposed improvements enhance our projects and are also a service we offer other design professionals.

Greenroof:

Our work has taken us to new heights!

Higher Education:

From campus planning to memorials and entry features, we bring a full range of services and experiences to campus design. Some of the institutions we have served include Kenyon College, West Virginia Northern Community College, West Virginia University, West Liberty University, The Ohio State University, and the University of Akron.

International:

WPG was selected to design an international sister city garden in Xuzhou, China for Morgantown, WV in 2021. The garden opened later that year in Xuzhou’s Eco park as one of 7 international gardens representing each of their seven sister cities around the world. It was the only garden representing North America. The design was themed to represent Morgantown and Appalachia while also highlighting the similarities in our plants as part of the “Eastern Asia- Eastern North America Floristic Disjunct”

Background

Memorials:

Our memorial work is a mix of independent projects and projects combined with campus, or governmental centers. We communicate the meaning and spirit of place that our clients desire in our reverent place making.

Parks:

Since 1997, Hays Landscape Architecture Studio, Ltd., a WallacePancher Group company, has produced dozens of plans for Parks and Resorts. These vary from revenue/master plans for 100+ acre parcels down to small pocket parks.

Memorials:

WPG provides support to architects for school projects including all site civil, landscape design and playground design.

Resorts

Oglebay Resort, Seven Springs Mountain Resort, and Hidden Valley have dozens of projects representing master planning, gardens, wedding venues, entries, a zoo, lodges, courtyards, accessibility, native plantings, cottages, condos, trails, tubing, roads, parking, streetscape, wayfinding, etc.

Scenic Byways:

We provide a full range of land development services and add our landscape architectural service for a value added differentiator.

Retail/Commercial Development:

WPG has been participating in scenic byway projects for over 20 years with working with Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. WPG serves as a task order consultant with ODOT for Scenic Byway and Historic Bridge Consulting.

Trails:

Trail work has been a part of dozens of our projects and will often be the primary focus of a project.

Urban Design and Streetscapes:

What sets us apart from other consultants is firsthand understanding what it takes to revitalize our communities as historic property developers, volunteers, entrepreneurs, property owners, public officials, educators, community foundation committee members, as well as planners and designers.

Our designers have decades of urban redevelopment design experience including a 31-million-dollar streetscape project with numerous, concurrent parking, development, and urban green space projects in the City of Wheeling, WV. Streetscape projects integrate cultural sites, plazas, bioswales, pedestrian safety measures, traffic calming, branding, storm sewer separation, outdoor dining, street realignments, as well as coordinating with property owners, utilities, agencies, sub-consultants and partners.

WPG has completed Economic Redevelopment Master Plans that estimate the number of jobs, construction costs, and parking for a fully redeveloped downtown. Numerous other communities across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia have received similar consulting assistance to include historic projects, farmers markets, gateways, development corridors, waterfronts, etc.

TESTIMONIALS

“Wallace Pancher Group was selected by the College community to lead a ‘parking lot project’ on our downtown Wheeling campus. The team greatly improved the appearance and functionality of two existing lots while creating a third from near scratch. Through a nice touch, architectural elements from our historic building were used in the design to keep continuity across the entire campus. The College knew we were getting more parking spaces, but was wonderfully surprised by the attention to landscaping that was ultimately more of an impact. In the end, the College and City were extremely pleased with the finished project.”

Jeff Sayre, Vice President
West Virginia Northern Community College

Waterfront and Water Ways:

We have numerous projects along waterfronts that include the Pittsburgh Pirates PNC Park, Wheeling Heritage Port, and several park project along the Muskingum River in Ohio. WPG has completed numerous stream restoration projects, design and construction. WPG and Hays LAS had design build companies for stream restoration and site development respectively which provided invaluable experience for the intricacies of construction.
